Five days prior to the examination

• Stop eating food containing fibres and seeds. Such may include coarse bread, root vegetables, green vegetables and fruit.
• Stop taking iron tablets.

You are also not allowed to take certain medications. This may include certain types of painkillers. 

Do not take medicines that contain any of the following: 

• Acetylsalicylic acid
• Ibuprofen 

• Naproxen.

The day before the examination

• Eat a light breakfast and lunch, for example, omelettes, fish balls or yoghurt, or soup without solids. 
• After 12 o'clock noon you must not eat anything, but you can drink clear beverages. Such may include tea, coffee, broth, cordial, juice without pulp or electrolyte solution.

The evening before the examination

From 5 PM the evening before your examination, you should start drinking the laxative Plenvu.

How to take the laxative:

1. Mix the package of the first dose with 5 decilitres of cold water.
2. Stir until all the powder has dissolved.
3. Prepare 5 decilitres of any transparent drink.
4. Drink up the laxative within an hour. First drink a glass of laxative and then a glass of clear drink until you have consumed everything. 
5. Once you have drunk all the laxative, you can drink as much clear liquid as you like during the evening.

The day of the examination

• You must not eat anything before the examination. You may consume dextrose, grape sugar, if you want.

• Do not take any medication before you take the next dose of the laxative.  

Four hours before your examination

Four hours before the examination, you should take the second dose of the laxative. 

1. The second dose of laxative contains two bags that are marked A and B. They should be mixed together in 5 decilitres of cold water.
2. Stir until all the powder has dissolved
3. Prepare 5 decilitres of any transparent drink.
4. Drink up the laxative within an hour. First drink a glass of laxative and then a glass of clear drink until you have finished everything. 
5. When you have finished drinking all the laxative, you can drink clear fluids until the examination.

• You first get a needle in your arm. It is a thin tube that is inserted into a blood vessel and taped to the hand. There you can get sedatives or painkillers if you want.
• You change into patient clothes.
• You lie down on a stretcher and are examined with the colonoscope.

After your examination, you can eat and drink again as usual. However, you must not drive a car for 24 hours if you have received medication during the examination.

When will I get a result?

The doctor or nurse usually can tell you straight afterwards what the colonoscopy showed. If the staff takes samples from the intestine, you will find out after a few weeks what the sample indicated. The doctor will submit the results to you in the agreed manner.
