Examination of the colon with colonoscopy

You are about to have a koloskopi, colonoscopy It is an examination of the colon with a soft tube inserted through the rectal opening. It is important that you prepare yourself beforehand so that the examination can be carried out. Your bowel must be clean.

You use one or more of the following medicines:

  • waran
  • pradaxa
  • xarelto
  • eliquis
  • lixiana.

Preparation for your examination

This is what you should do at home before the examination

5 days before the examination

  • You are not allowed to eat food with fibres and seeds. It can be, for example, wholemeal bread, root vegetables, vegetables and fruits.
  • You may not take iron tablets.
  • You must not use NSAID-type pain tablets. These are voltaren, ipren, diklofenak and treo.

The day before the examination

  • Eat breakfast and lunch as usual. But don't eat anything after 12 o'clock.
  • From 3 pm you should start drinking a laxative. It is a type of saline which you can pick up at a pharmacy. You already have an electronic prescription for what you need. Dissolve each bag of the agent in a litre of tepid water.
  • Drink one glass every 10 minutes. You must drink the entire amount of 4 litres within 6 hours.
  • At the same time, you may drink clear drinks such as water, broth, clear soup, juice without pulp, clear juice, soda or small amounts of black coffee or tea.
  • After 1-3 hours you will get diarrhoea.

The same day as the examination

  • In the morning you should drink 2 more litres of the laxative.
  • You are not allowed to eat food, but you can drink clear drinks until the examination.
  • You can eat dextrose if you want. 

This is what occurs at the examination

  • You will get a needle in your arm. It is a thin tube inserted into a blood vessel. There you can receive sedatives or painkillers if you want them.
  • You will change into a patient shirt.

What happens next?

  • After the examination you can start eating and drinking as usual again.
  • You are not allowed to drive for 24 hours if you have received medication.
