Vaccination mot HPV i Västmanland - engelskaThe content concerns Västmanland

Being vaccinated against HPV (human papillomavirus) reduces your risk of developing cervical cancer. HPV may cause changes at the cellular level, which may in turn develop into cervical cancer. HPV is a common virus.

Eliminating HPV and cervical cancer in Sweden

By being vaccinated, you agree to participate in a national research study whose goal is to eliminate HPV and cervical cancer in Sweden. You give your consent to participate in that study either digitally before you come to be vaccinated or on the spot.

You can read more about the research study at hpvcenter.se.

Making an appointment for vaccination

If you are a woman born between 1994 and 1999, you can make an appointment for HPV vaccination free of charge.

Log in using electronic ID

To make an appointment, you log in using electronic ID to the clinic where you are a registered patient. You will also need to give your consent to participate in the study.

Who can be vaccinated?

Anyone who wants to can be vaccinated against HPV. However, it is free of charge only for those who are 29 years old or younger. Since the autumn of 2020, HPV vaccination has been included in the general vaccination programme for both boys and girls. Before that, it was offered only to girls.

Women in Västmanland County born between 1994 and 1999

If you were born between 1994 and 1999, you can be vaccinated free of charge against human papillomavirus (HPV). An invitation will be sent either to your officially registered address or to your Kivra mailbox. However, you can make an appointment for vaccination even before you receive your invitation.

If your legal sex is not female but you have a cervix, the offer of vaccination applies to you and you can make an appointment. However, you will not have a letter sent to your home.

If you are not a registered resident of Västmanland County, you will also not receive a letter, but the offer of vaccination applies to you and you can make an appointment.

You can be vaccinated even if you already have been

If you were vaccinated before 2019 (and were born between 1994 and 1999), you can have a booster dose. The vaccine used at present is called Gardasil 9 and offers broader protection than the older vaccine that was used before 2019. For this reason, the offer is also extended to those who have already been vaccinated with the older HPV vaccine.

Conditions for vaccination

  • If you are pregnant, you should avoid being vaccinated, because no HPV vaccine has been tested on pregnant women.
  • By being vaccinated, you agree to participate in a national research study whose goal is to eliminate HPV and cervical cancer in Sweden. You give your consent to participate in that study either digitally or on the spot when you come to be vaccinated.
  • If your legal sex is not female but you have a cervix, the offer of vaccination applies to you and you can make an appointment.

HPV self-sample

When you come to be vaccinated, you will be given an HPV self-sampler free of charge. When you have taken your sample, you send it in to obtain your test result.  You post your sample in a normal postbox and receive your test result in a letter.

The test will show if you have HPV. If you do, you will be given an appointment with a midwife to have a cervical smear performed 3–4 months later.
