How to complain about healthcare services

Have you had a bad experience in healthcare? Then you can complain. You can complain in different ways. You can also report what has been good.

You can also help someone else complain about healthcare services. In that case, that person needs to approve it and give you something called a power of attorney (fullmakt). With a power of attorney, you can report what has happened to the person.

You can complain at the place where you received care

You can complain at the place where you received care. In that case, you can talk about what happened.  

You can also report what has been good. This helps to improve healthcare services.   

You can do this in one of these ways: 

  • Call the clinic and speak to the healthcare staff.  
  • Write to the clinic. You can write a letter or message via the e-services on 1177.se. 
  • Call or write to the clinic manager. You can do this, for example, if you are not satisfied with the explanation from the staff. It may also be that contact with the staff is not working so well. 

Do you want to complain about care from the municipality? 

You can complain if you receive healthcare at home from the municipality and are not satisfied.   

In that case, you should call or write to the nurse responsible for the municipality's healthcare services. The nurse is called MASMAS means the medically responsible nurse.  

You should receive a response as soon as possible 

You should receive a response as soon as possible. You should ideally receive a response within four weeks.  

Sometimes it takes time for the clinic to investigate what has happened. In that case, the response may take longer than four weeks. The clinic will tell you if this is the case. 

How you can receive a response 

You can get a response in different ways: 

  • in a letter 
  • in a phone call 
  • by meeting with healthcare staff 
  • as a message via the e-services on 1177.se. 

You should get a clear response 

The care provider should give you a clear and understandable answer. 

This should be in the response: 

  • what happened and why 
  • who to call or write to if you have any questions. 

You can get help from the Patient advisory committee (Patientnämnden)

The Patient advisory committee can help you when you need to contact a care provider. In Swedish, the Patient advisory committee is called Patientnämnden. 

For example, you can get help to: 

  • complain about a care provider 
  • get a response from a care provider 
  • find out what rights you have in healthcare  
  • find out which other authorities you can complain to. 

 All regions in Sweden have a Patient advisory committee.

You can ask the Patient advisory committee for help in different ways: 

  • You can call. 
  • You can send a message via the e-services on 1177.se. 
  • You can send an email. 
  • You can write a letter.
