Getting tested for COVID-19

Most people do not need to get tested if they have symptoms that could be COVID-19. But some do. You need to get tested if you work in healthcare or elderly care, live in a nursing home, or receive home care services.

When should I get tested?

You may need to get tested if you have symptoms that could be due to COVID-19. You should do this even if you have been vaccinated.

You need to get tested if any of the following are true:

  • You work in healthcare, medical care or elderly care.
  • You live in a nursing home or receive home care services.
  • A doctor or nurse asks you to get tested.

You can get COVID-19 more than once. But you usually do not have to get tested if you have had COVID-19 at any time in the last three months.

Getting tested

The most common test is called a PCR test.

The sample for the test can be collected by any healthcare professional. Sometimes, you can collect the sample and test yourself. If this is the case, you will get more information about what you need to do.

It is important that you stay home until you get your test results.

How to order tests in Jämtland Härjedalen

Everyone living in or visiting Jämtland Härjedalen can order COVID-19 tests. You need to log in to 1177.se to make an appointment for the test. Then you choose how you want to submit the test. When you log in, all of the text will be in Swedish. Please ask someone who speaks Swedish for help if you need it.

There are different ways to submit your test:

  • You can make an appointment to take the test at a specific testing site. There are rules for how you can travel to the site. You can read more about the different sites when you log in to 1177.se to make your appointment.
  • You can make an appointment to pick up the test at a pharmacy. You are not allowed to pick up the test yourself. Ask someone you know who is not sick to pick up the test for you. You take the test yourself at home. Then the person who picked up the test for you needs to return it to the same pharmacy.
  • You can make an appointment to have the test delivered to your home if you live in certain areas in Östersund Municipality. Then someone will deliver the test to your home. You take the test yourself at home. The same delivery person will take the completed test with them when they leave.

How to make an appointment if you are registered in Jämtland Härjedalen:

  • Log in to 1177.se with your electronic identification. When you log in, all of the text will be in Swedish.
  • Look under the Regionen rekommenderar [Regional recommendations] heading.
  • Click on Här kan du beställa egen provtagning i Jämtland Härjedalen [Here you can order your own test kit in Jämtland Härjedalen].
  • Click on Ny beställning [New appointment] and select Tid för egenprovtagning covid-19 [Appointment for self-administered COVID-19 test]
  • Read the information carefully and click on Slutför beställningen [Finish making appointment]. Then you will see the various options for submitting your test.
  • Select how you would like to submit your test and select the time.
  • Remember to complete the entire process.

How to make an appointment if you are visiting Jämtland Härjedalen:

Antigen test – rapid test

There are other tests, such as antigen tests. These are also called rapid tests, and can be purchased at a pharmacy.

You do not have to buy an antigen test if you do not want to.

How testing works

A sample is taken with a special swab in your nose, your throat or both.

It may feel strange, but it does not hurt.

How long should I stay home?

Stay home if you feel sick, even if your test results show that you do not have COVID-19. Stay home until you are feeling healthy again.

If you have COVID-19

If the PCR test results show that you have COVID-19, stay at home until you are no longer contagious. You are no longer contagious when all of the following apply:

  • You are feeling a lot better.
  • You have been fever-free for two days.
  • At least seven days have passed since you became ill.

You do not need a new test to find out whether you are still contagious.
